….. the role of the disabled in society
At a factory in Ipswich a team of trainees with learning disabilities produce some of the finest hand crafted furniture available in the UK . They are trained and guided through the steps of furniture making by a group of dedicated instructors, all of whom are fully qualified craftsmen.
Tables, chairs and benches are the mainstay of the business, all traditionally designed to withstand the worst the British weather can throw at them. This quality has been recognised at various trade shows around the UK and their exhibition and demonstration stands have brought them four first prizes over the last three years.
The venture is visible proof that disabled and people with learning difficulties can contribute to society and their contribution, with the right support and resources, can be equal to that of the able bodied.
The DVD produced in conjunction with Orwell Mencap provides a brief background to the creation of ‘Genesis' followed by a look around the workshop which has confounded people who believed that the disabled would not be able to cope with the training and handling of potentially dangerous machinery needed to produce furniture.
The programme shows the workshop in action and interviews with staff provide an insight into some of the problems and prejudices they have had to overcome. |
